Appearance: Straight, raven black hair lies atop Masaru’s head. Thin eyebrows rest just above his narrow eyes, their color the same as that of his hair. Continuing the trend his nose and mouth are also very thin in appearance. However when one gazes at Masaru the thing they notice is his expression, or more appropriately his lack of one. His eyes seem frozen in their blank expression, which makes any expression he tries look forced.
For his body, Masaru has always been considered “gangly” when described by others. Measuring in at 5’9” and only weighing 130 lbs. Not helping is the fact that he has very little to no visible muscle mass, which can make him seem frailer than he truly is. His skin color is a healthy beige and lacks any distinguishing marks.

Then the game will begin. His summoned pieces will not stop until those who have been declared opponents are destroyed, or they themselves are.

History:
Chapter 1: Prologue
Masaru was born June 21 3:21 PM, the first and only child of Isamu and Etsuko Harada. Isamu was a business man who worked endless hours, and Etsuko was a loving housewife. They had been high school sweethearts and had been married happily for several years when Masaru came into the picture. With the addition of a child the family almost seemed the “picture” of peaceful middle class, and for the first few years of Masaru’s life it was.
Even as a child Masaru was a more reserved person. Although he got along fine with other children, his number of friends were few. He simply preferred to be alone. With his father constantly at work, that left only his mother their for him to open up to. Like many mothers she doted on her son, always encouraging him to expand his knowledge. Thus Masaru quickly found himself doing things his mother herself enjoyed: reading novels, classical music, and chess.
Chapter 2: The Curse
Yet even if things had continued along this route his life would have been normal. Things all changed whenever he began to see things. Apparitions that floated throughout the city, ghosts. He quickly learned that normal people couldn’t see them; his father simply thought he was making imaginary friends. Only his mother listened and acknowledged that he could see the dead.
It was because of this curse that Masaru met his first friend, Hibiki. He looked like any other boy his age, except from the chain that protruded from his chest. As soon as the spirit recognized Masaru could see him, he immediately introduced himself. Masaru tried to ignore the spirit like he did the others, but Hibiki was persistent. Little by little Masaru opened up and eventually the two became the best of friends.
Yet the more time Masaru spent with his new friend, the more his family grew concerned. Although his mother accepted it, his father believed he was making imaginary friends. Masaru heard them arguing but never realized why, his mother denying that anything was wrong. Eventually though his father was able to convince his mother and they confronted Masaru about his “friends”.
Masaru tried to argue, tried to say that they were real but in the end his father wouldn’t listen. Reluctantly the young boy agreed with his parents and went to find Hibiki.
Chapter 3: Destruction
It was to be expected that Hibiki didn’t like the news. Masaru agreed that it wasn’t fair, but he wouldn’t disobey his mother. Hibiki began to argue again but before he could begin he fell to his knees clutching his chest. It wasn’t until then that Masaru noticed just how short the chain on his friend’s chest had begun. Confused he watched stunned as the Hibiki he knew transformed into a ferocious monster.
After that everything that Masaru remembered was a blur. He remembered running from the monster. Then he was at his house, still running. He could hear screaming. The house was on fire and he could see the bodies of his parents in a pool of blood. More screaming and then a figure shrouded in black. The last thing he remembered hearing was “I’m sorry kid. I failed.”
He awoke in a hospital, battered and bruised. Before he had time to collect his thoughts the authorities had entered. They explained the story as best they could. According to them robbers had come in and attacked the family. After wrecking the place they had lit the house on fire to cover the evidence. As to whom they had no idea.
As they spoke though Masaru was only half listening. As his memories returned to him, the impact of what had happened hit him. He paniced, and in that panic he told them the true story. He told them of Hibiki, he told them of his transformation, he told them of the black cloaked figure, he told them all he knew. The men nodded their head but he could tell they were patronizing him, they thought he had snapped. As they left they gave him one of the only things that had survived the wreckage, a Black King chess piece he and his mother had played with so many times.
Chapter 4: Door to Darkness
That was how Masaru became alone. He had no family on his father’s side, and he had never met his mother’s family. Thus he was given to social service and eventually an orphanage. Masaru could have been in a dumpster for all he knew. He grew even more reserved then he was previously. He merely stayed in his room and stared at the memento of his mother.
It in that isolation that his sadness started to turn to hatred. Hatred for the monster his friend, hatred for the monster he had become, hatred for the black robed man, and hatred for the people who had disbelieved his story. The more he stared at the chess piece, the more his hatred grew. This cycle continued until he met Kage.
The voice surprised him the first time he heard it. A whisper he could barely hear, yet no one but him was around. Masaru ignored it at first yet the whispering continued. It sympathized with the young boy’s hatred, he knew of his pain. The more he listened the louder it grew until he finally realized where it was coming from, the black king. Thus another friendship was born between Masaru and Kage.
Chapter 5: A New Beginning
It was a great wound Masaru received, one that would probably never heal. Yet time can lessen any wound and so it was for Masaru. He eventually was able to find a foster family, good people who cared for him. As he grew and his pain lessened the voice of Kage faded. Within time he was able to live a mostly normal life.
By the time he was in high school he had figured out how to live with his curse. He had been able to move on with his life, although he kept the memento of his mother with him as a reminder. He was blessed and since the incident he had yet to run into a hollow, until his new family decided to transfer to Karakura town. It was there he would be reminded of his past.
Unlike before he was not attacked, in fact he wasn’t even seen by the hollow. He merely saw it as it was running through the city, after some other prey. Yet the mere sight of it, the sight of that mask brought back the hatred he had thought buried. He didn’t know why but he followed the beast. In an alley he saw it, approaching some minor spirit. It was then he heard a voice he only half believed existed. Kage had returned. “Do you hate the being before you?” it asked. Masaru merely nodded. It was then that his fullbring first activated, creatures crawled out from his shadow. Masaru was stunned as these summoned creatures proceeded to jump the hollow catching it by surprise. It’s death was swift.
After that Masaru spent the next few weeks he experimented with the power he had discovered, the beasts he could control. He now had the power to destroy all the things he hated. It was a new beginning.
