Name: Masami Haruka (Nicknamed Sami, or Sam)
Age: 209 (Appears 20 ish)
Height: 5ft / 152 cm
Weight: 94 pounds
Appearance:
Masami has long spiky black hair with a deep purple tint most noticeable when the light hits it at certain angles. Her hair hangs over both sides of her face to roughly frame her cheeks, her hair otherwise flowing down to her mid to lower back. She had big deep sea blue eyes, which adds to the ‘dark, powerful’ colours she naturally possesses, giving her an often serious look, even if in reality this is not often the actual case.
She wears her shinigami uniform with a few minor adjustments. The most noticeable of which are that her uniform is slightly too large, which results in her uniform seeming somewhat baggy on her, as though whoever had given it to her was expecting her to grow into it. The second is the upper part of her uniform has extra fitting which allow her to close it higher than the sash would normally support. In the human world she favours a tight black trench coat with a hood, complete with a black shirt, pants and shoes. While this causes her more attention that she might like once noticed due to the obvious conspicuous nature of it, she likes this outfit even more so than her shinigami one. So much so that she actively seeks assignments into the real world, and has even considered moving to the seventh division for more opportunities; however her loyalty to her captain, squad and friends prevents her from doing so.
Her body type is petite, being naturally shorter than most, her body’s curves are also well kept, even streamlined. She has been made to feel self-conscious about her body in the past, so decided long ago to keep it firmly fastened from eyes sight. Even going to far to ‘modify’ her traditional shinigami clothing to do so. While her superiors do not stop her from doing so, they do not support such actions.
History: Born into a prestigious family, right from the off great things were expected of Masami. She was the middle child in a family of 5. Her older brother already in the academy when she was born, her younger brother born several years her junior. Even as a child her daily life included much training, of physical, mental and spiritual in nature. Her family was well known, and while not noble, it lingered on the high end of social status. Her father always hoped great things for their family if his children were all successful.
Pushed hard, Masami was taught to be competitive, and to always strive to be the best. Often pit directly against her own little brother whenever possible. She was taught to strictly adhere to the rules, no matter any personal anguish or feelings, the rules must be upheld or anarchy would rule soul society. These lessons were carved into her very thinking pattern, and would remain so for the rest of her life. To any other children she might accociate with she was always the ‘try-hard’, the reserved girl who only seemingly wanted to win having learnt since she was born; this was the only way to get attention. Because of this she often became more of an outcast among people her own age. She met with other children on occasion, her mother made sure of that, but they were never friends, despite her own desires and best efforts.
Loneliness formed within her, which eventually became a lack of confidence. Soon enough it began affecting her performing during her training, and it was then he father pulled her up on it. However she was still a child, and could offer no explanation, not knowing how she could be affected by something not directly related. Not long after her brother bested her for the first time. Then it happened again, and again. Soon he had surpassed her entirely, and her father though proud of his second son began to act colder toward her, not acknowledging her anymore for her efforts for its fruitlessness.
Her loneliness deepened. Soon her brothers became unsympathetic to her slipping performance, instead waving her off like they might a subordinate. Only her mother did not do so. While this allowed her to become closer to her mother than ever, it was obvious her father did not approve. Even so, eventually she fell out of her training altogether. There was a family feud for sometime afterward. Her father would not speak to her, and her brothers despised her for her laziness. Her mother, though was disappointed also, defended her every step of the way. Secretly and shamefully gleeful that she might be able to have a relationship with her daughter.
As time moved on her brother joined the academy. Her older brother who had long since graduated had become a ranking officer in the second division. She could not remember her father being happier, or more proud. She was happy for her father, but also began to become slightly resentful of what she saw as his selfish nature. While she spent much time with her mother, and learning new things to her such as traditional work, the sort unbefitting of a ‘warrior’ such as a shinigami she remained lonely to an extent. Just being close to one person when you are surrounded by people was not enough. Her loneliness began to manifest itself differently. Into mistrust. She soon found herself question the motives of others. Her fathers only interest in her was when he was of use to her. To help his name along. Her brother now it seemed, only saw her as a training tool to improve his own strength. Her mother seemed to want to find someone else to not be lonely with. She could not feel anger or place any blame on her mother. She was entirely sympathetic, but she also did not want to be where she was. She longed to get back into training, moving forward again, towards something.
It was then she and her elder brother had the conversation that would change the course of her life. He told her that he always had expected more from her. That he was surprised that the confidence young woman he had seen grow up became a dud of an undeveloped girl.
Masami was furious. In a blind rage she actually attacked him. He quickly subdued her and laughed at her ‘fire’ telling her to come find him again when she had decided to carry on with her life. After that he became the second division’s lieutenant and she barely even saw him again. His words however stuck right with her. She despised him for it, and loved him. It was all the excuse she needed. She could get back on track, for herself, not her father or his petty name. She would do it for her mother, to show her it’s never to late to be a part of something more. And finally she would do it for her little brother, just to prove to him she could kick his ass still.
Re-joining however was not simple. While she was accepted into the academy due to her still fair spiritual abilities she was raw and unrefined. Nothing like anyone at the academy was expecting from a Haruka. Her kido was sluggish, even volatile. Her hand to hand techniques were sloppy and rehearsed. The only area she displayed a modicum of skill was swordplay. Though some of the large male students called her sword ‘butterblade’ joking it was a glorified butter-knife, she quickly proved size really didn’t matter. This earnt her a little popularity from her class who found it hysterical that a 200 pound man was bested by a 90 pound girl. She was certainly not the queen of the scene, however she finally after many years developed a small click of friends who she would treasure for a great time to come, instantly becoming highly loyal to them.
She shared with them her secrets and in turn learnt theirs. She did not always have anything to say to them, and said nothing during those times. She found herself naturally reserved. While she loved to talk, talk, talk, she rarely had overly much to say as a response given her little knowledge of people and so lack of knowledge and confidence in dealing with them. Even those she respected.
When graduation came she found herself at a loss. Her elder brother, and her ultimate quarry was the lieutenant of the second division. Her little brother had become a part of squad six. However, she had no despire for the work of the second squad, and equally so for the sixth. Under the advice of her mother she took time to think only for what it was she wanted. After all she was doing it for herself, not for anyone else. What did surprise her was on her first day joining squad XIII her father spoke one sentence to her for the first time in many years.
“Congratulations. I am proud of you”
She tried to shrug it off. However upon meeting her new lieutenant superior, she was in blissful tears. Not only for her father, but for her own success. Since they he’s called her ‘Mad-Masumi’ much to her chagrin.
Since then she has become more of herself. Still competitive and highly code-abiding as she grew up, she has since then added her own personal code to her routine. She has also remained somewhat paranoid, often thinking the worst of peoples intentions. Her closer friends who have learnt of this sometimes egg her on to get her worried for their amusement. Nothing serious has ever become of it, well not unless you could the time she hog-tied her little brother because they convinced her it was a kido corps guy messing with her using an illusion. She remains only too fortunate he is too proud to confess what happened being a ranked officer himself now, it could have caused her a lot of trouble.
